Battery Usage and Maintenance Methods

The following introduces some issues that need to be paid attention to regarding the usage and maintenance of batteries.

If a battery is not used for a long period, it will slowly discharge by itself until it is scrapped. Therefore, the car should be started periodically to charge the battery. Another method is to disconnect the two electrodes of the battery. It is important to disconnect the positive and negative electrode wires from the battery terminal in the correct order: first, disconnect the negative wire or the connection between the negative terminal and the car chassis, then remove the other end marked with the positive symbol (+). Batteries have a certain lifespan and need to be replaced after a period of time. When replacing, the same procedure should be followed. However, when reconnecting the battery cables, the order is reversed: first connect the positive terminal, then connect the negative terminal.

The battery’s charge level can be reflected on the instrument panel. When the ammeter needle shows insufficient charge, the battery should be charged promptly. Sometimes, if the battery is low while on the road and the engine stalls and won’t restart, as a temporary measure, you can ask for help from another vehicle. Connect the negative terminals of both batteries and the positive terminals together.

The density of the electrolyte should be adjusted according to the standard for different regions and seasons.

When the electrolyte level is low, distilled water or special replenishment liquid should be added. It is important not to use drinking purified water, as it contains various trace elements that can negatively affect the battery.

Continuously using the starter can cause the battery to be damaged by excessive discharge. The correct method of use is to keep each starting attempt under 5 seconds, with at least 15 seconds between attempts. If the car still does not start after multiple attempts, other factors such as the circuit, ignition coil, or fuel line should be checked.

During daily driving, frequently check whether the vent holes on the battery cover are clear. If the vent holes are blocked, the hydrogen and oxygen gases produced cannot be discharged. When the electrolyte expands, it can rupture the battery casing, affecting its lifespan.

Check for signs of oxidation on the battery’s positive and negative terminals. It may help to regularly pour hot water over the battery’s wire connections.

Check whether any parts of the circuit have aged or are short-circuited, to prevent the battery from being prematurely retired due to excessive discharge.
