Most car batteries last between three and five years under normal conditions. Beyond that, the internal chemical reactions that produce power become less efficient. The plates inside the battery degrade, active material sheds, and the overall capacity drops significantly. Parasitic Drain – The Hidden Power Thief

Even when your car is parked and turned off, certain components continue to draw a small amount of power to keep things like the clock, radio presets, and engine control module memory alive. This is normal and typically measures around 35 to 50 milliamps. But when something goes wrong, that draw can increase dramatically. Faulty wiring, malfunctioning modules that fail to enter sleep mode, or improperly installed aftermarket accessories like amplifiers, alarms, and GPS trackers can all cause excessive parasitic drain. Your Alternator Isn’t Doing Its Job

The alternator recharges your battery while the engine runs. If it’s failing, your battery won’t get the charge it needs to keep going. This is one of the most damaging habits for battery health. The battery slowly loses charge over time and never gets a full recharge, leading to premature failure. If short trips are part of your daily routine, consider taking a longer drive once a month to give the battery a proper charge. The same goes for vehicles that sit unused for weeks at a time – the battery will naturally self-discharge, and without regular driving, it may drop to a level where it can no longer start the car.

Extreme Temperatures Take a Toll

Both heat and cold are hard on car batteries. Cold weather slows down the chemical reactions inside the battery, making it harder to produce enough power to start the engine. Heat, on the other hand, accelerates internal corrosion and evaporation of the electrolyte fluid. Extreme temperatures can shorten a battery’s lifespan significantly, and if your battery is already weak, a stretch of hot or cold weather can push it over the edge. There’s not much you can do about the weather, but parking in a garage or shaded area can help reduce temperature extremes.

Loose or Corroded Connections

A battery can be perfectly healthy and still fail to start your car if the connections are bad. Corrosion on the terminals creates resistance that prevents power from flowing to the starter. Loose cables do the same thing. If you see a white or bluish powdery buildup around the battery posts, that’s corrosion. Cleaning the terminals with a wire brush and ensuring the cables are tight can often resolve starting issues without replacing the battery.
